1,2,3 Ketosis Again!

I walked into the weight loss clinic not knowing what to expect.  I was greeted by a very friendly woman who told me the Dr. would be with me shortly.  I was taken aback.  I wanted to lose weight, not see a Doctor.  The Doctor gave me a mini-physical and said I was in great shape.  Well, great shape if you didn’t count the extra pounds.  She gave me her stamp of approval to move forward.

The Doctor asked me if I was interested in the vitamin B shot.  I grinned from ear to ear.  Would I like the shot that I heard would improve my mood, give me energy, and help my metabolism?, “Yes, please.  Can we make that a double?”

She also asked if I would like an appetite suppressant.  I froze and had an instant flashback to my twenties when I was 132 pounds, exercised twice a day, and wouldn’t buy a piece of clothing unless the size 4 or less fit me.   For some bizarre reason, I had the idea that I needed appetite suppressants to look better in my bikini.  They made me SOOOO irritable and angry; I literally freaked out on one of my co-workers in the lunch room.  Truth be known, she always kind of bugged me, but my behavior and vocabulary were extremely unprofessional and could have cost me my career. Even with that in mind, I considered saying yes to the appetite suppressants, but I quickly answered, “No thank you, I better not”.

I met with a Dietician who was wonderful.  She was very warm and supportive.  She was very knowledgeable, which gains my instant respect, and she was funny – a trait I cherish.  Just when I thought we were destined to be Facebook friends at the bare minimum, she put the smack down on me and told me I needed to get to Ketosis in the next four days!

I can’t say I am a stranger to Ketosis.  My Husband, Tony, and I did the South Beach Diet in 2007.  Looking back, I would say it was our most successful diet of all times.  We felt great, lost quite a bit of weight, and even more inches.  You may be wondering what happened or why we stopped. Well, would you believe me if I told you the South Beach Diet got me pregnant? We had been hoping for our second child for a few years and found out we were pregnant a few months after starting the diet.  In his book, The South Beach Diet, Arthur Agatston, M.D. tells about a woman who had been trying to conceive for 7 years and became pregnant months after starting the South Beach Diet.  She had PCOS and Agatston’s diet was able to reverse it, which made a healthy pregnancy possible for her!  A link to The South Beach Diet book is in the Book Nook.

A few months ago, several acquaintances of mine had amazing results with the keto diet, so I jumped right on the boat.  Unfortunately, the keto diet made me feel like there was a hand grenade in my stomach that exploded several times an hour.  I guess we’ll chalk it off to another diet failed.

I left the clinic with very simple directions.  I was to eat 800 calories a day of protein foods – nothing else, not even vegetables, drink quite a bit of water and take several supplements they suggested.  On the 4th day I would take the keto test and if it went well, potentially eat some vegetables.  Sounds easy enough – right?…….
